The action takes place in the United States, during the Franco-Indian war. The English commander Munro, seeing his fortress endangered by the advance of French troops under the command of Montcalm, requests the sending of reinforcements. They send him 1,500 men, in addition to Munro's two daughters, Alicia and Cora, who is accompanied by Major Heyward, Cora's fiancé. The latter and some soldiers take a shortcut to get there earlier, for which they use the Indian guide Magua, chief of the ferrets. But once Munro had Magua flogged. The Indian then, to avenge that offense, makes the small group in his charge go into the forest, where his Indians, allies of the French, are lurking. But they meet Falcon-eye hunter and his Mohican friend Unkas, the last of the Mohicans, both deadly enemies of the ferrets, and save the English from falling into the trap. After other warrior incidents, the group managed to reach the Munro fort, already besieged by the French. Finally these expire. Surviving Englishmen are honored; but again the ferrets attack and in the midst of the slaughter they take Alicia and Cora prisoners. Munro and his men try to rescue them but all their attempts are useless and Alicia is assigned to Magua as spoils of war.

The English, aided by the Delaware tribe, fight the ferrets and annihilate them. Magua kills Alicia and Unkas, "the last of the Mohicans", and he dies at the hands of Hawkeye. Alicia and Unkas are buried together. Munro survives, but can never overcome the pain of that terrible loss. Cora returns to her land, and the great Hawkeye-hunter remains with the faithful of Delaware.

This is Cooper's most popular work, a classic adventure novel among the Redskins. At times, his prose takes on genuinely poetic flights, for example by ending Unkas; and despite the fact that its characters are romanticized, they are always authentic, just like the natural environment and its inhabitants.

Pero se encuentran con el cazador Ojo-de-Halcón y su amigo mohicano Unkas, el último de los mohicanos, ambos enemigos mortales de los hurones, y salvan a los ingleses de caer en la trampa. Después de otros incidentes guerreros, el grupo logra llegar al fortín de Munro, sitiado ya por los franceses. Finalmente éstos vencen. A los ingleses sobrevivientes se les rinden honores; pero nuevamente atacan los hurones y en medio de la matanza hacen prisioneras a Alicia y Cora. Munro y sus hombres tratan de rescatarlas pero son inútiles todos sus intentos y Alicia es asignada a Magua como botín de guerra.

Los ingleses, ayudados por la tribu de los delaware, luchan contra los hurones y los aniquilan. Magua mata a Alicia y a Unkas, "el último de los mohicanos", y él muere a manos de Ojo-de-Halcón. Alicia y Unkas son enterrados juntos. Munro sobrevive, pero nunca puede superar el dolor de aquella terrible pérdida. Cora regresa a su tierra, y el gran cazador Ojo-de-Halcón permanece con los fieles delaware.

Es ésta la obra más popular de Cooper, una clásica novela de aventuras entre los pieles rojas. Por momentos, su prosa adquiere vuelos genuinamente poéticos, por ejemplo al dar el final de Unkas; y a pesar de que sus personajes están idealizados románticamente, siempre son auténticos, igual que el ambiente natural y sus moradores.
